The Carpathia was sailing from New York City when, early on 15 April 1912, it reveived a distress signal from the ocean liner Titanic, which had struck an iceberg and was sinking. Captain Rostron was asleep when his wireless operator, Harold Cottam who, by chance, had left his headset on while undressing for bed, had heard the signal. Cottam ran to Rostron’s cabin to aleert him. Rostrom immediately ordered the ship to race towards the Titanic’s reported position, posting extra lookouts ton help spot and manoeuvre around the ice he knew to be in the area and extracting every bit of speed the ship’s engines could muster.
